As the Middle East expanded its trade with the rest of the world, dates were introduced to southwest Asia, North Africa, and Spain. The fruit then made its way to Mexico, California and South America.

The palm tree grows in arid and semi-arid regions with hot, low summers and no precipitation. Roots should also be kept away from weeds, and sometimes a small pit (a waterway) is created around the base of the tree to maintain moisture. • Egypt is the Top Producer.

Egypt is the leading country in the production and cultivation of dates. Each year, the country produces about one million tons of dates. Based on the report from 2015 their production volume was 1.69 Milion Tons. Besides, their export value in 2018 was 53.30 million US Dollars.

Iran is the runner up and is the second top producer of dates. Based on the report from 2016 our production volume was 1.07 Milion Tons. Besides, our export value in 2018 was 172.44 million US Dollars.

The third-largest producer of dates in Saudi Arabia. The country has the right conditions for the growth and cultivation of dates and its annual production is 836,983 tons. Approximately 388,000 acres (about 15,7018  hectares) are allocated throughout the country to date palm production. It exports about 8.8 percent of the world’s dates, valued at about $ 94.3 million. Mainly exported to Jordan (19%), Yemen (17%) and Kuwait (15%).

Iraq is in fourth place with an annual production of 675,440 tons and holds 7.3% of global Date exports. Iraq’s annual output reached only 420,000 tons under Saddam Hussein’s regime. After that, with the reinvestment, there was a gradual increase in industry and production. In 2014, the country exported $ 77.5 million worth of dates, 79 percent of which was exported to India and a percentage to Egypt (8.5 percent) and Morocco (3.7 percent).

• Tunisia is the top exporter. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Israel follow Tunisia respectively.

Iran is the third Top Exporter of dates. 10.60% share in global exports belong to us.
