Because India is unable to grow enough fruits to meet demand, the country is the world’s largest importer of dates. 2011 figures show that India bought an estimated 256,000 metric tons, a figure roughly 40 percent of the dates offered on the world market.

India grows roughly 40 to 50 varieties, which are either categorized as soft or dry. Examples of important soft varieties include Medjool, Shamran, Hayani, Halawi, Saidi, and Khalas. Commercial types of dry dates include Deglet, Thoory,and Dayri. So the variety of available dates in India is wide.

Medjool

Medjool dates are the best and most expensive commercial variety in the world. They are one of the available dates in India. In occupied Palestine, an average yield of 2 tons per hectare generates $ 5 per hectare. Each kilogram of top-notch dates can be sold at targeted markets around the world at prices above $ 1. The source of this figure is Morocco. Currently, Israel and the United States are the world’s largest producers of this product, with a production of 2 and 3 tons per year.

Hayani

The Hayani is a Soft, meaty and sweet date. The origin of the Hayani is Egypt. Its size is 15-30g and its shape is Elongated. It has a Dark Brown-Black color and available Year Round. Common uses of the Hayani are Desserts, Cooking, Salads, Cocktails, mousse. The storage temperature of this date is -18°C and Shelf’s life is 10 months.

Halawi

Halawi dates have a thick, soft golden flesh and have a rich, caramel-like sweetness that makes them one of the most beloved varieties of dates. In fact, “halawi” means “sweet” in Arabic. They are similar to the deglet noor variety in shape and color, but have their own unique taste.

Saidi

Saidi-like dates are very sweet and soft larger variety with a large fat pit.

Khalas

Average-sized and reddish dark brown in color, Khalas dates are moist and sticky, have a hearty flavor and a butter-caramel taste. Very fleshy, they melt warmly in your mouth.

Deglet

Commonly referred to as the “queen of all dates”, the authentic Algerian Deglet Nour has a soft touch, a translucent light color and a soft honey-like taste, characteristics which distinguish it from other dates.

Thoory

Considered a type of “bread date”, or dry date, Thoory dates originated in Algeria, a country in northern Africa. While we can’t say for sure it was the Thoory dates. In the dry classification is the Thoory, which was originally brought to the U.S. from Algeria. It’s perfect for the nomads because they could be kept for long periods of time. Thoory dates have a hard chewy body and a nutty flavor. Thoory dates are often referred to as the “bread date” because of their dry, firm, pastry-like texture. This dry date has a semi-sweet, peanut-like nutty flavor. They are another type, available dates in India.

 

Dayri

Dayri dates are large, oblong-shaped fruits with thick soft flesh surrounding a single seed. Dayri dates are dark brown to black in color and very tender, lacking the fibrous texture that some other varieties tend to have. Though not as sugary as the Medjool, but sometimes referred to as even more “date-y” in flavor, the Dayri’s modest sweetness is balanced by a somewhat earthy finish.
