The date fruit is one of the most common fruits, for example, it is meaty and contains nutrients. Dates have existed in the human diet since ancient times and were one of the oldest fruits humans cultivated. Archaeologists have attributed the construction of palm trees to 5,000 years ago because of its name on clay tablets of the 5th century. so where do dates fruit come from?

Dates (Phoenix dactylifera) have long been the most important fruit in the arid regions of the Middle East such as Iraq, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula, and North Africa. During the last three centuries, dates have been introduced to new cultivation areas such as Australia, India, Pakistan, Mexico, South Africa, South America and other parts of the United States. Dates have been used for more than 500 years as food, ornamental plants, canopies, fiber and fuel for harsh climates where fewer plants can grow. The oldest records from southern Iraq in ancient Mesopotamia show that date palms were probably built five years before Christ.

The word date is Persian in origin and has been imported from the Persian language into Hindi, Urdu, Turkish, Indonesian, and Malay to the east and Greek to the west. Palm fossils are derived from Cretaceous sediments and extend to northern Canada during this period. Then, Mr. Linnaeaus scientifically named and introduced the date palm species in the year 1753. The main home of the palm is the sub-tropical regions with low rainfall that is sufficient for irrigation.

The date range is mainly found in the Northern Hemisphere and in the countries of Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries of the Persian Gulf as well as most of North Africa and the USA and is also sporadic in the Southern Hemisphere. The dates have spread from their origins to the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and the Middle East. Dates came to Egypt and the Middle East 5 years BC. The date spread was later associated with the spread of Islam and reached southern Spain and Pakistan.

Based on statics Egypt is the leading country in the production and cultivation of dates. The country produces about 2 tons of dates each year. This is just over 17% of world production of dates and only 3% of world exports. Egypt has grown more than 100% of date palm cultivation since 1993 and now has about 15,558,000 palm trees. Those are Indonesia (24%) and Malaysia (15%). The total export value is about $ 41.8 million.

After Egypt, Iran stands at 947,809 tons annually. But despite high production, it accounts for about 7.7% of the world’s total exports. And Iran date exporters mainly export to Asian countries. The largest importers are India (16%) and Malaysia (11%), followed by Russia with 9.9% of Iran dates.

The third-largest producer of dates is, Saudi Arabia. The country has good conditions for growing and cultivating dates, with an annual production of 4 tons.

Iraq is in fourth place with an annual production of 675,440 tons and holds 7.3% of global Date exports. Exporters have exported, 79%  to India and a percentage to Egypt (8.5%) and Morocco (3.7%).

 

Without dates, human populations could not be concentrated in arid regions. Caravans have been around for centuries to transport dates. From the beginning cultivation of dates became a sacred symbol for fertility and fertility. Some think of the palm tree as the tree from which Adam and Eve evolved and were evicted from paradise because of it.

Dates have a significant religious and cultural impact on the people of the Middle East and are mentioned in various scriptures. The dates are mentioned three times in the Torah, three times in the Bible and three times in the Quran.

In the United States, date palm production began in the late 1980s and is still important as an agricultural crop in the desert regions of southern California and Arizona. From the late 1980s to the present day in the southwest and south of the United States and many countries today, date palms are used for green space in different areas.
